A 189 sq km tiger habitat on the Wainganga, three safari gates, and a jeep safari you can book in about two minutes. Here is what the sanctuary actually is, and how to visit it well.
Umred Pauni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary is one of central India's quieter tiger habitats — close enough to Nagpur for a morning trip, yet far less pressured than the reserves it connects to. This page covers the sanctuary itself: how large it is, how it is laid out, what genuinely lives there, and how to choose and book the right gate for the safari you actually want.

Back to HomeThe sanctuary covers roughly 189 square kilometres and was notified in 2013, making it a relatively recent addition to Maharashtra's protected-area network. It straddles two districts: Pauni Tahsil in Bhandara district, and the Umred, Kuhi and Bhiwapur talukas of Nagpur district.
Its shape is defined by water and road. The Wainganga River and the Gose Khurd Dam backwater form the northeastern boundary, State Highway 9 and Bhiwapur town close it off to the south, Umred sits on its western edge, and a narrow ten-kilometre range of hills rising to 600–800 metres marks the northwest. That combination — river, reservoir, dry deciduous teak forest and low hills — is why the habitat feels noticeably different from one gate to the next.
Umred Pauni Karhandla is not an isolated island of forest. It sits inside a much larger tiger landscape and functions as a corridor between reserves, with a forest connection running to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve along the Wainganga.
| Neighbouring protected area | Approx. distance | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve | ~40 km | South |
| Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary | ~50 km | Northeast |
| Pench Tiger Reserve | ~80 km | Northwest |
For a visitor this has a practical upside. Because UPKWS absorbs some of the tourist pressure that would otherwise fall on Tadoba and Pench, safaris here tend to run with fewer vehicles in the zone. Less engine noise and less dust generally means animals that have not already been pushed off the track before you arrive.
On tiger sightings — an honest word. The sanctuary supports resident breeding tigers and sightings happen regularly, but nobody can guarantee one, and you should be wary of any operator who says otherwise. What we can do is put you in the right zone, in the right slot, with an experienced naturalist. Come for the whole forest and a tiger becomes a bonus rather than a disappointment.
Every gate charges the same fee, so the choice is about habitat, distance and what you most want to see. Each has its own detailed page.
Umred taluka, Nagpur district. Opens into the densest teak core zone and has the highest recorded sighting frequency of the three.
Karhandla Gate details →
Bhiwapur taluka, Nagpur district. Greener valley country with watering holes — the strongest gate for gaur herds and dhole packs.
Gothangaon Gate details →
Pauni Tahsil, Bhandara district. Riparian forest, sand bars and the Gose Khurd backwater — the most scenic zone and the best for birds.
Pauni Gate details →UPKWS is best known for its tigers, but the recorded species list is considerably broader than most visitors expect — and the reptile and bird diversity is a genuine draw in its own right. For species-by-species detail, including which gate and season suits each group, see the full UPKWS wildlife guide.
Which of these you actually encounter depends heavily on season. The dry months of March to May concentrate mammals around shrinking water, which is why sighting rates peak then. Winter brings migratory birds and the most comfortable conditions. The monsoon turns the forest emerald and empties the tracks, at the cost of shorter sightlines. Our month-by-month season guide breaks this down properly.
Three things decide whether a booking goes smoothly: the gate's closed day, the reporting time, and your ID.
| What | Detail |
|---|---|
| Morning slot | 5:30 AM – 9:00 AM, report by 5:00 AM |
| Evening slot | 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM, report by 3:00 PM |
| Vehicle | Open 4WD gypsy, up to 6 guests plus driver and naturalist guide |
| Weekly closures | Karhandla & Gothangaon: Mondays · Pauni: Tuesdays |
| ID | Original government photo ID for every guest, matching the booking |
| Not included | Camera / DSLR charges, payable in cash at the gate |
The full fee breakdown — what the permit, gypsy, guide and service components each cost, and the per-person maths by group size — is on the safari fee and timings page. If you would rather read the booking process, documents and cancellation policy in detail before committing, that is covered on the UPKWS safari booking page. For routes and drive times from Nagpur, Bhandara, the airport and the railway station, see how to reach UPKWS.
Permits are capped per slot, per gate. The Karhandla morning slot is the first to fill, especially at weekends and through the March-to-May peak. A week's notice is sensible in season; a few days is usually enough in the quieter months.
Common Questions
Use the booking form on this page. Enter your details, pick one of the three gates — Karhandla, Gothangaon or Pauni — choose your group size, date and morning or evening slot, then confirm. Our team files the forest department permit against each guest's photo ID and confirms by phone and email.
The sanctuary covers approximately 189 square kilometres and was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 2013. It spans Pauni Tahsil in Bhandara district along with the Umred, Kuhi and Bhiwapur talukas of Nagpur district in Maharashtra, and is bounded roughly by the Wainganga River and the Gose Khurd Dam.
Karhandla Gate is the closest to Nagpur and opens into the densest core zone, so it is the usual first choice. Gothangaon Gate suits visitors hoping for gaur herds and dhole packs in more open valley country. Pauni Gate is the most scenic, running along the Wainganga River and Gose Khurd backwater, and is the strongest choice for birdwatching.
No. The sanctuary has resident breeding tigers and sightings do happen regularly, but no operator can guarantee a sighting and you should treat any such promise with suspicion. Sightings depend on season, water availability, weather, luck and your guide's tracking. Visitors who come for the wider experience — gaur, deer, birdlife and the forest itself — are rarely disappointed.
Recorded mammals include tiger, leopard, dhole, sloth bear, gaur, nilgai and sambar along with other deer species, plus rarities such as flying squirrel, pangolin and honey badger. Published records also list more than 90 bird species across 22 families and over 26 reptile species across 11 families, including Indian python, Indian cobra and monitor lizard.
By road, Karhandla Gate is about 50 km from Nagpur city and takes roughly 1.5 hours. Gothangaon Gate is about 55 km via the Bhiwapur route and Pauni Gate about 60 km via the Nagpur–Bhandara highway. Published references cite around 58 km to the sanctuary itself, which differs from the road distance to an individual gate.
