Timings, booking and visitor guide for the most renowned entry point into the Umred Pauni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, 50 km from Nagpur.
Safari Entry Point
The Karhandla Gate is the most popular and frequently visited entry point of the Umred-Pauni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary (UPKWS). It sits on the eastern fringe of Nagpur district in Umred taluka and opens into one of the most wildlife-rich sections of the sanctuary — a landscape known for tiger sightings in central India. If you are planning a Umred Pauni Karhandla safari, this is the gate most visitors choose first.
The gate takes its name from the Karhandla village nearby and has long been a favourite among wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts. The jeep trails here wind through a mosaic of teak forests, grassland patches, and seasonal water bodies, providing good conditions for animal sightings through much of the year. Sightings are never guaranteed, but experienced guides read pugmarks, alarm calls and waterhole activity to improve your chances.
UPKWS also has two other entry points. Compare them with Gothangaon Gate and Pauni Gate, or read our wildlife guide to know what to look for on each route.
Safaris operate in open gypsies (4WD jeeps) accommodating up to 6 guests plus a trained naturalist guide. The trail covers approximately 20–25 km within the core zone, taking you through varied terrain — from bamboo thickets to open clearings where predators often rest during cooler hours.
Both morning and evening safaris are available, each offering distinct advantages. Morning safaris reveal the forest waking up — with birds calling, tigers returning from night hunts, and mist rising from waterholes. Evening safaris capture the golden hour glow and increased animal activity as temperatures drop.
The best time for tiger sightings at Karhandla Gate is October to May. November through February offers pleasant weather and good visibility through the dry deciduous forests. March to May, though hot, brings the most dramatic wildlife action as animals congregate around shrinking water sources, and sightings tend to peak during this period.
The monsoon months of July to September transform the landscape into a lush emerald canvas, with full waterholes and dramatic skies. Sightlines are shorter in the thick vegetation, and access depends on forest department notifications and road conditions, so confirm availability before booking — see our monsoon safari guide and the best time to visit UPKWS post for details.
For the current jeep, guide and entry charges, see the safari entry fee and timings page. To reserve, choose your date, slot and group size on the safari booking page. Weekends, holidays and the October–May peak fill quickly, so book early.
Karhandla Gate is located approximately 50 km from Nagpur city centre, about a 1.5-hour drive. The most convenient route is via the Nagpur–Umred highway, then a right turn at Umred towards the sanctuary. Taxis and private vehicles are the easiest options, and the gate has a small parking area and a forest department reception desk where permits are checked. Safari Tips
Avoid bright or white clothing. Earthy greens, browns, and khaki help you blend into the environment.
Report at the gate 30 minutes before safari time. Latecomers may forfeit their booking without refund.
Noise disturbs wildlife. Speak softly and follow the naturalist guide's instructions at all times.
Flash can startle and stress animals. Use a zoom lens with a high ISO setting in low-light conditions.
Bring sufficient drinking water, especially for morning safaris. No food or plastic bags allowed inside.
Safari slots fill up quickly, especially Oct–May. Always pre-book to avoid disappointment.
